Tutu Foundation UK’s flagship programme ‘Conversations For Change’ helps solve conflict in the community

Conversations for Change aims to unite individuals residing in the same geographical area but belonging to different social groups. The purpose is to foster understanding of community tensions and conflicts, leading to personal and community transformations.

The process starts by understanding the origins of anger and conflict, recognising our interconnectedness as human beings, and then addressing these issues within ourselves and our communities through the concept of Ubuntu. The story of South Africa serves as a powerful example of overcoming conflict and how Ubuntu can facilitate healing, enabling participants to discover their own potential and contributions to their communities. Conversations for Change is an open and adaptable program that aims to spread itself by providing individuals with the necessary skills and support to initiate Conversations for Change in their own and other communities.

Conversations for Change has conducted workshops that have engaged over 1000 individuals in communities across the United Kingdom and internationally, addressing issues such as gang violence, abuse on public transport, and bullying. Through these workshops, Conversations for Change has empowered people with the skills and confidence to express their feelings, actively listen, and be listened to. Moreover, Conversations for Change has played a pivotal role in fostering dialogue between youth gangs, the police, councils, and other marginalised groups.

In addition to its impactful work, Conversations for Change has invested in the professional development of 122 community facilitators and 26 trained mediators.
