Timeline hosts Abdülhamit Bilici and Jesse Waters spoke with our Interim Chair Mungi Ngomane about how the African philosophy of Ubuntu (“I am because you are”) can help heal today’s divided world. Mungi reflected on lessons learned from her grandfather’s legacy, emphasising compassion, patience, and bridge building even in moments of deep division.
Mungi discussed the “No Kings” movement, the need to rethink ideas of violence and resilience, and why meaningful activism must begin with honest self-reflection rather than performance.
Drawing from personal experiences and Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s relationships with figures like the Dalai Lama, Mungi highlighted how Ubuntu offers a path toward empathy, community, and shared humanity in an age where technology connects us but often drives us apart.
